AA Eastern League: Binghamton 7/7/1 vs Trenton 3/6/2

As you may recall me writing on the 20th, Cory Mazzoni, tonight’s starter for Binghamton, had been having a string of high strikeout games. At the time, his last 4 starts, he’d gone 24.2 innings, and struck out 34 while walking only 5, but allowing 15 runs (9 of them earned), for an ERA/RA of 3.28/5.47. Tonight was another one of those games, he allowed 3 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings, and struck out 10 more, pushing his weird stretch to 5 starts, spanning 30.2 innings, with 44 strikeouts and a 3.52 era/5.28 ra over that span. Pretty curious, at least to me. Chase Huchingson and Adam Kolarek (both lefties) combined for 3 shutout innings in relief, Kolarek pitched the 8th and 9th for his first save of the season. On offense, Cesar Puello had a single, steal and run scored. Blake Forsythe had a double and triple in 3 trips, he also walked. Travis Taijeron had a 2 run homer and walk in 3 trips.

Matt Bowman had another outstanding outing tonight, giving up just a run on 2 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings, while striking out 7, and was in line for the win, before TJ Chism (NP) blew the save, and then gave up 3 in the 10th to take the loss. Jayce Boyd and Dustin Lawley, both ridiculously hot right now, had multi hit games. Matt den Dekker singled and struck out twice as he continues his rehab stint in the FSL.

Matt Koch had a good outing tonight, giving up 4 hits over 7.1 scoreless innings, while striking out 5, sadly, he didn’t have #TWTW on this night. Offensively, Brandon Nimmo took another 0-fer with 2 more strikeouts. Since returning off the DL, he is now a whopping 23 for 104 with 39 Ks and 15 walks. Youch. Even worse, he’s 6 for his last 40 with 18 strikeouts, including 5 straight multi-K games.
